Trends Part 2 – Fall 2017 Trends

Welcome back! Last post I discussed the creation of trends.  The wait is finally over because this time, I am excited to share my take on fall 2017 trends to look out for. You may be thinking, “Fall?!? It’s 105 degrees outside!” Nevertheless, now is the perfect time to discuss upcoming trends so you can plan your wardrobe budget and shopping list.  So, away we go…

Fall 2017 Trends You Won’t Want to Miss

Mad Men
I call the first fall 2017 trend Mad Men. This trend is all about “Borrowed from the boys” looks. It consists of tailored pantsuits and blazers in traditional menswear fabrics. Think checks, hounds tooth and plaids; jackets with padded strong shoulders (Yes, that means shoulder pads are back!). Based on runway trends, trenches and longer blazers will be huge. For a casual menswear look, consider a buffalo plaid flannel shirt with jeans and booties (Brittany’s go to fall look!), Converse or even a penny loafer. Loafers and lace-up oxfords will be in every shoe store.

Styling Tip: For the most flattering look, choose a blazer that has some shaping. Long lapels (such as a shawl collar) elongate the body (and who doesn’t love that?). Blazers that button below the bust line work best for women “blessed in the chest.”

Red Hot
The next trend is a color trend. I am calling it Red Hot, because red was all over the runways and will most surely be in the stores. Two shades of red will be popular. Grenadine, a true, dynamic, bold red and Tawny Port, a rich, deep, regal burgundy. Tawny Port is a beautiful head-to-toe look. Wear these two shades with the other fall colors, neutrals, or even wear them together.

Styling Tip: If you feel red is too bold for you, then opt for red accessories (Red too bold?  Nah!). Every woman needs a pair of red heels. Red heels can amp up your feelings of power, confidence and sexiness. And red shoes really do go with nearly everything. Think of red shoes as…a neutral.

Winter Florals
Models wore floral prints HTT (head to toe) during Fashion Week. Although there were some surprisingly Springy floral prints, the majority were deep Winter florals (think Dolce Gabana). Florals evoke a happy, feminine feeling. So, break out your floral prints – or buy a pair of floral print shoes or booties.

Styling Tip: You can wear florals without looking like your grandma’s couch or “Little House on the Prairie” by pairing your floral prints with edgier vibe clothing – like a leather jacket. You can also mix floral prints with other prints, such as animal print and checks for a modern yet wearable update (For example, see the picture of cabi Blushing Blouse with the Jungle Skirt ). In addition, y’all know how I love mixing prints. So rebellious.

Leather Look
Harper’s Bazaar is calling this trend Matrix Moment. Cabi is calling it Tough Love. Whatever you call it, the look is leather (or faux leather) with a look of sophistication and edge. Faux leather is not the faux leather of yesteryear. Faux leather is “friendlier” (at least to animals), less expensive and soft. So select a leather (or faux leather) jacket, skirt or leggings and rock it!

Styling Tip: If full-on leather gives you nightmares of  biker gangs, then select a garment that has leather trim. Alternatively, take a leather garment, such as a leather skirt, and pair it back with a feminine blouse.

Pleasing Platinum
Neutral gray is one of Pantone’s top ten colors. Designers have put their own spin on this color for fall 2017 trends. The runways were full of futuristic grays, silvers and platinums. It was truly everywhere!  TheFashionSpot.com said the designers’ message was clearly one of escapism.  I agree, but escape what?

Styling Tip: Rather than looking like an astronaut in full-on silver, try a sparkly bootie, purse or jacket. I love the velvet cabi Sunday Topper!  It’s a classic denim jacket cut in a luxurious soft shiny velvet. (Keep in mind shiny fabrics makes the area it covers appear larger.  This can be both good and not-so-good).

Here are some additional trends you will likely see in the stores this Fall:
• Soft Texture – Shearling jackets, velvet, corduroy, soft sweaters and feathers (yes feathers!)
• Higher Rise Jeans and trousers – Rises are rising! Yea for this trend! We will see the reemergence of shorter tops and tops tucked in to show off waistline. (Tunics aren’t going anywhere though. They are necessary for leggings).
• Anything Animal – skin print, snake print, feathers, and animal motifs
• Shoe trends – Boots were huge on the runways. Here are a few ideas for some shoe updates:

White shoes and booties

Velvet print booties

Sparkly boots

Slouch boots

Combat boots

Embellished Heels

Satin and silk shoes

Okay, so there you have a short list of fall 2017 trends you’ll soon be seing a lot of. Have fun getting dressed! I encourage you to try a new trend. Which trend will it be? I would love to hear from you.  Comment below to share.

Until next time…

Fashionably yours,

Ellen
